A series of daily drawings started in the fall of 2013 creating one drawing a day for 365 days with the goal of exploring a daily creative discipline and using social media as a form of interactive accountability and documentation. View gallery.

Another interrelated cluster of from my show RETROSPECT @chicagotruborn. With so much of my earliest work, even up until today, being so representational drawing and heavily dependent on line work and often with a limited palette I began to feel a strong need to explore colors and forms not constrained my lines or color limitations. This started with a series of color studies on paper expounding on elements that had I have always been gravitated toward that evolved in a very organic way over many years and were derived from my earliest days doing graffiti. I later became very curious as to how a similar approach with something more dimensional and could work in combination with what I had previously done with primality character centric wood cut base reliefs. The resulting pieces were by and large the focus of my 2018 solo show RADIAL FIELDS. This coincided with the large scale public piece with titled Radial Frequencies #radialfrequencies located along Chicago Avenue. The center top piece Radial Bloom with Clouds was created in a similar vein. Link in bio for VR tour.

I worked on this piece everyday for a month starting in the beginning of March 2017 and finished it at the end of March as part of a self initiated project titled 12 MONTHS. All the pieces in this series explored personal memories related to my life growing up in Chicago. This was the last in the series. It’s more or less a self portrait based on photo taken in my bedroom in 1989 the year I started doing graffiti. The gas mask was an alley find from several years earlier and it came in handy when I started practicing on the walls of my room. My room stayed like this until the Chicago Police’s Graffiti Squad started executing raids in an attempt to crack down on what they saw as a growing problem. After a close friend who lived a few blocks away had his home raided, as a precaution I cleared out and stashed anything graffiti related and painted my entire room a depressing gray. The last image in the swipe is me working on this piece in the studio a portion of which was recreated in the south west gallery window. Currently on view as part of my solo show RETROSPECT @chicagotruborn. Check the link in my profile.

The closest thing I have to a reoccurring or signature character would be the traffic light head. I think I have always been fascinated with the shape and function of traffic lights and they are very satisfying to draw. Also The idea of people looking to them and waiting on them to tell us when to go, when to stop and when to slow down seem very metaphorical directives for navigating life but I have only ever painted this character in black and white reducing those clear color coded directives to values of gray at best. Often depicted surrounded by perplexed onlookers early on but in later work it began to appear as a watcher, observing events from the past. This seemed to evolve over the course of a year while working on the pieces in my 12 Month series. At some point I realized that this character was autobiographical in nature. I actually believe most characters are autobiographical. This may have only been the second or third time I incorporated it into a piece, in this case a triptych. It originally hung as three separate panels but I’d always wanted to built a frame that would hold all three as a single piece. The wood panels with the typography and hand are original elements from an old wooden refrigerator box I found in the attic of the home I live in. I cut and built panels using the most interesting parts and used it as the foundation of this piece. I honestly prefer working with materials that have had a life of their own. The work in my current show RETROSPECT @chicagotruborn was curated in clusters for lack of a better word. All the work is interrelated in some way. At the very least they were pieces that I wanted to be shown and experienced together and at the very best are directly built upon one another. The works on paper and the subsequent pencil studies came out of a project called 52 Weeks where I worked on a single 18” x 24” piece on paper every day for a week over the course of the equivalent of a year. The hand altered prints were experiments created from an original base relief in 2015. Hanging them in multiples is meant to be reminiscent of waiting and hour for a bus only the have three of them come all at once. The approach for that base relief came out of the 2006 bus sculpture I created for a touring show the opened in New York, Los Angles and Columbia and was also part of the 2014 award winning collaborative Art Prize installation More or Less. South east gallery window install @chicagotruborn as part of my current show titled RETROSPECT. A combination of site specific painting, found wood cut base reliefs from the studio and an outdoor banner based on a studio piece form 2005 that was then printed and hung at the inaugural reboot of Lollapalooza in 2006. They did a little reception before day one. Perry Farrell stopped by to thank the artists. After it was all over I got to keep the banner. Its hung in my studio for the last few years. This show has so much personal history in it for me. I’ve never done anything quite like it. I could say much more. Check the link in my profile. The show is fully online.

Currently on view as part of my running solo show RETROSPECT @chicagotruborn. I particularly love to see people’s working spaces. Artists work spaces are some of the most interesting. With that in mind I decided to share a bit of mine. In the south east window of the gallery I have replicated a section of my studio work space including the current work in progress that was on my easel at the time. I like to surround myself with ideas, images, interesting objects and works in progress often things I’ve been picking away anywhere from weeks to months and in some cases years. Looking is an integral part of how I work. I always need things to look at. I like to look at things and work them out in my head and often begin to piece together new ideas from what is surrounding me. It gets a bit messy at times but there is order and process in there too.

Certain objects are inherently interesting to me, finding objects randomly makes them more interesting still and I have knack for finding things. As a result I have several small and not so small collections of found objects ranging from particularly interesting bits of wood, old signage and storefront lettering to parts of cars, trucks, busses, trains, small machines and pieces of the city itself. I’ve collected these things for no other reason than the fact that I liked them and in some way they seemed to call out to me from forgotten corners, cracks and alleys in my coming and going. Several years ago I began building and assembling these parts and pieces into new objects of there own which seemed like the most natural and satisfying thing to do with them. Pairing that with another fascination of mine which is the homogenizing effect of a single paint color on disparate objects, something I first encountered and observed painting the various surfaces I came across during my years in the street using spray painting to coat and cover all manner of things. This in and of itself was fascinating and beautiful to me almost a kind of magic all its own. This is how the pieces in the section of my current show RETROSPECT @chicagotruborn came to be. If I am honest I also see the playfulness of space ships, action figures and Tetris in these pieces as well. The two dimensional work on paper and the initial pencil study in the center were derived and inspired by the assemblages on the left and right. The additional of the color radials came later and seem to bridge them to my more recent work. The show is fully viewable through the link in my profile. The process of how work is made is so important to me and one of the most interesting and engaging things about being someone who makes art. I feel I learn the most from these things in my own work and in the work of others. The seeds of inspiration, the origins of ideas, how they develop and grow, the choices made along the way, the compromises and the culmination of all those things in a finished piece of work wether a success or failure is an endlessly fascinating playground. I save every doodle, every sketch, every study and every paint spattered comp. That is a bit of the story behind why and how this piece exists and why it is part my current show RETROSPECT on view now @chicagotruborn. Check the link in my profile.
